I’m very grateful to have a 24 hour exotic vet nearby. I’ve taken both my rabbits to Pender for emergencies and the staff is always very patient and kind. One rabbit had to have surgery and was there for three nights. I thought I would annoy the staff with my 4-5 calls a day checking up, but the staff was always very understanding and sweet, even with my million questions. Also, in response to some negative comments, I never felt over charged. In fact, I’ve often been reimbursed whenever the staff didn’t use something that was part of my original charge. Again, as someone with limited emergency care options, we are very grateful for Pender and their staff.

Our pets always enter calm and exit ready for the ride home. We appreciate the care they receive and thankful for staff attention during the stay.

On first tour, Pender Exotics Boarding in Fairfax VA looked pristine and professional. But looks are indeed deceptive. (1) At checkout, if you don't scrutinize their invoice, you may get scammed. Using flimsy reasons, they tried to overcharge me for an extra boarding day ($34), claiming a cage was provided to my pet while waiting for pick up. That was totally contrary to their prior written & verbal representations that they charge only for each night pets board there. Though I disputed their overcharge immediately at check-out, they refused to refund me for 3 days, until I threatened to dispute that charge through my credit card. If a facility of this scale would scam people for $34, how good can they be. (2) Given their expensive rates, service is surprisingly poor. Their staff general attitude (exotics boarding) is one of indifference, even rude. They even lost 3 of my pet's long-time emotional objects (for scent). Those items were meant to stay with my pet at all times inside the cage. Worse, Pender staff didn't even have the decency to apologize for their neglect. Several requests to locate missing items went nowhere. (3) Just as troubling is the fact they keep sick animals with well animals in the same boarding room. (4) All in all, I find Pender callous and overly commercialized. I’m glad my pet survived boarding there unscathed. But I won’t tempt fate by boarding her there again. Will look for pet boarding in Philadelphia, where pet facilities are less cut-throat.

Pender has treated my birds and today my dog, Abbey. We had her at different vets before today for skin issues but to no avail. They quickly found the problem and already she's on the mend! Love you guys at Pender!

Horrific experience at Pender which ultimately led to my beautiful cockatoo struggling to breathe for four hours under their noses, until her heart gave out and she passed. I was not notified and would have never known of those last horrifying four hours of her life if I had not insisted on her medical records being sent to me. Requested a call from the owner, it's been a month now with no phone call from him. My girl was supposed to be sent out for individual cremation after her necropsy, instead she sat in the freezer for over a week and a half basically forgotten while we waited to be told her ashes had come back. Instead we went down to Fairfax to pick her up and brought her to a memorial facility that treated her like she mattered. Still waiting on pathology results, apparently they don't want to release those. I don't expect miracles but I do expect communication and the ability to spare my animals from suffering. Four hours of panicked attempts to breathe and no phone call to me until she was literally in cardiac arrest. Disgusting, inhumane and unethical... moreover the aftermath was handled so poorly. Just a complete circus.
