Great after hours care but wish price was more reasonable. I had to admit my dog for overnight observation since her vet isn't open 24-7.

My 12 year old miniature poodle was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer and was not a candidate for surgery. The oncology vets at Southpaws who cared for Chase were Dr. Boostrom and Dr. Sheafor. My poodle underwent three chemo procedures every three weeks over a period of 7 weeks. Dr. Boostrom is remarkably knowledgeable and wise for his age, and is warm and compassionate. Dr. Sheafor is a true "dog whisperer." She was down on the floor with my dog, and by touch could tell the exact spinal lumbar that was giving my dog pain. She and Dr. Boostrom always spent the time that we needed--they never rushed off to the next patient. We know now to never complain about waiting, because in our hour of need, the staff would not minimize the time spent with us. (It is a triage situation, sometimes, where the most severely injured get to go first, etc.) Dr. Boostrom was honest with us, and after only 11 weeks since Chase was diagnosed, told us it was time to euthanize. He was there with us in a comfortable room and I got to hold my dog the whole time. The room was decorated like a living room, with a carpet and upholstered chairs. The vet used just the right, soothing words to explain things and help us deal with our loss. The vet assistants were also wonderful, compassionate, and knowledgeable. An extra touch was the little dog angel lapel pin that they gave my family members. Vets are usually extraordinary, but the vets and staff at Southpaws were beyond that into the super exceptional category!

We called several times. Whenever we called they were too busy to address our concerns and had to call us back or keep us on hold. They didn't allow us to spend more than 10 minutes at a time to visit our dog. We felt very disconnected as a pet owner when our dog was sick. Doctors and nurses perform rounds for fours per day. This time takes away from 15 hour visiting time allowing only an 11 hr. visit window to see your pet. Waiting rooms were saturated with the smell of urine. When we wanted to talk to the doctors, they would put us in a waiting room every time.

Thanks customer service at this place was abysmal. I was recommended by my vet which is why I went to Southpaws. Getting any information after our visit was like pulling teeth. I was told my dog would need medications, but I had to be the one to ask all the questions! Where will I get it? Do I come to VCA to pick it up? Will you call it in? Do I have to call it in? What are the instructions for administering it? I also had to call for the results of her tests. After all that my dog was no better and I took her back for a follow-up. I was in the waiting room with my dog for A long time until I turned and looked at the receptionist. She then got up and walked to the back. When she returned I asked if she new how long it would be because we were waiting almost 20 minutes. She said we had been waiting for 16 minutes and that it would be "soon". (The clock in the waiting area was a few minutes fast.) When we were called backed I asked the lady (the only nice one of our visit) if she was told we were here when we arrived she said she had been waiting for us but was just told, so the receptionist just didn't bother to tell anyone we arrived and it wasn't even busy. Finally, when we were wrapping up our appointment with the vet, I asked her if I would be notified about the results of the tests my dog was going to get. She was very rude and defensive and said they always respond. This is actually untrue considering our last ridiculous email exchange, described by the questions I had to get all the answers to above, ended with me asking if I would need to call to make the follow up appointment or if we were going to schedule it via email and I got no response. I will never go back to this place and my other pet owner friends I will tell to steer clear of this place.

Could not get to have an consultancy. People over the phone are so rude. I had schedule an appointment and called back to see if they could look into my pet records because she needed surgery the earliest the better and they dindt even have the name of the hospital they had to call, I had to explain the reason my dog was going to this hospital. It was like if I had never called, decided to cancel the appointment after evaluating other facilities attention. By the end they didnt even care I cancelled.
